Its been a month since halloween. I had tried every which way to find out more about gayathri but had no luck at all. I had tried asking my friend ask his flatmate about her but he never did that. (You knew what would happen didnt you? :) ) and i was being driven crazy by the whole situation. In the past, i had all the details of the girl i was attracted to but would have difficulty in talking or trying to make an interesting conversation. Here getting details itself was proving to be a mountain of a task. I had resigned to the situation that it was a hopeless thing and that i was probably not gonna see her until it was way too late in the year. I also had a nagging doubt about her relationship status. A girl like that was too good to be single. True i knew nothing about her, but hey just by the looks, it was impossible. So was my mission a futile attempt at just proving a point to myself?
Our group decided to go to this pub in bedford during one of the weeks when we did not have class. About 6 of us met up at the university pub. It had become my habit whenever i came to this pub to scan around the place to see if she was there. what i would have done if she had been there was a different thing altogether but that never stopped me from giving a cursory look around the place as soon as i entered it. And on this night when the pub wasnt crowded at all, i saw her sitting in one of the booths with some other guy. To say i felt deflated would be accurate to the T. I kinda lost a bit of the appetite for the evening and felt as though all my thoughts about her had been in vain. Clearly, some other guy had managed to contact her and get her out for a drink. How close must he be to have done that? I dont remember too much of the night after that other than the fact that i had a killer hangover the next day which kinda speaks for itself.
After this, i felt more reserved about my goal of wanting to get to know gayathri. I wasnt really sure if i wanted to do it anymore. I thought of the contingency that the guy could just be a friend and she was just being sweet to him. But somehow to my mind at that time, that seemed a little unlikely. I was thinking all this while walking to the lab a few days after that evening when i saw a figure dressed in black cross my path. I would not have noticed other people when i am walking usually but this somehow caught my attention by some faint effect of familiarity. I saw that it was her and i also noticed that our paths would cross exactly when we were face to face. And this kinda set off the spirited soul inside me and i perked up instantly. Within 2 steps actually. When we came across, I said hi! with my familiar smile of reasonableness that was my loyal confederate in every meeting. She turned up and gave back a smile and said hi. But clearly, i could see that she could not place me. I was now left with the uncomfortable situation where i could either explain why i said hi which would mean explaining who i was or just smile along and walk by. As a stranger. I decided to to swallow pride and explain who i was and went "hey we met the other day, remember, at the halloween party" and she was like "oh". This was not going the way i wanted it to go and the worst part was she kept walking so there was a gap between us which meant that i had to raise my voice for the next sentence. And i was like, "you are from chennai right? gayathri aint it?" and then with a spark that looked like recognition she was like "oh yeah! you are from chennai too." finally!!! and after this i just gave a wave to say that the conversation was over and walked the rest of the way to the lab. Needless to say, i was happy that i had finally talked to her but upset that she hadnt remembered me. Ofcourse, we had talked before this for like 30 seconds and that was like a month back. But still it felt a little odd.
I remembered having hummed this song sometime during that period of one and a half months or so:
I'd Love You To Want Me by Lobo:
When I saw you standing there
I about fell off my chair
When you moved your mouth to speak
I felt the blood go to my feet
Now it took time for me to know
What you tried so not to show
Something in my soul just cried
I see the want in your blue eyes
Baby, I'd love you to want me
The way that I want you
The way that it should be
Baby, you'd love me to want you
The way that I want to
If you'd only let it be
You told yourself years ago
You'd never let your feelings show
The obligation that you made
For the title that they gave
Baby, I'd love you to want me
The way that I want you
The way that it should be
Baby, you'd love me to want you
The way that I want to
If you'd only let it be
Now it took time for me to know
What you tried so not to show
Something in my soul just cried
I see the want in your blue eyes
Baby, I'd love you to want me
The way that I want you
The way that it should be
Baby, you'd love me to want you
The way that I want to
If you'd only let it be
To be continued..
